Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical value to words or phrases in the Hebrew language. It comes from the Greek word for "geometry" and has traditionally been used in Jewish mysticism and numerology. Gematria has since become a popular technique in mathematics, linguistics, and rhetoric, as well as other fields related to Torah study.
The numerical value of a word or phrase is calculated by adding together the value of each letter with which it is comprised. For example, if we wanted to calculate the numerical value of the phrase "batmen", we would sum up the values for each letter (2+1+20+4+5+40) to get 72.
One particular form of gematria that is often referenced is 111 gematria. This refers to when a word or phrase has a numerical value equal to 111. There are many Jewish storytellers and rabbinical scholars who believe that this number holds special meaning when it appears in Hebrew text, because it can connect to themes found throughout Jewish literature. For example, the number 111 could be connected to passages describing redemption or transformation through repentance and prayer.
Some researchers in biblical studies have studied 111 gematria more carefully and pointed out certain words that have this numerical value more often than others. These include words such as chaveir (friend), echad (one), tzaddik (righteous), selichot (supplications), and brit (covenant). All these words are associated with themes of understanding, unity, prayer and redemption found throughout Jewish texts.
